Uganda - the hidden paradise of ornithologists

If you have a faible for birds, then Uganda is THE African country where your dreams come true.

Uganda, being situated on the equator, covers an area of a total 236.580 kmē. In Jinja at Lake Victoria, the world's second-biggest lake lies the source of the Nile from where this amazing river starts its long journey up to the Mediterranean Sea and is responsible for Uganda's immense richness in water. Being widely untouched and because of its unique combination of typical savannahs, half-deserts, fantastic bush and tree land, tropical forests, great water-bodies, mystical moors and up to its widely known mountainous areas, Uganda is attractive for an enormous number of different species and types of birds. Next to the local kinds, Uganda annually appeals to birds of passage from the northern and southern hemispheres and offers them temporarily winter grounds.

Due to new scientific research there are around 9.800 different kinds of birds in the world of which - at least seasonal - around 1. 065 species and subspecies (Source: Avibase, Bird Checklists of the World) can be found in Uganda. Those are about the half of all types common on the African continent of which the area of the Queen Elizabeth National Park is leading with its about 500 different species. Some 15 endemically occurring kinds have to be added.

There can be no doubt - Uganda is one of the 3 countries that are richest in birds worldwide.

An overview of the species of birds in Uganda can be found here. HERE
